Evidence & myth-check guide
We say out loud when something failed to replicate — then explain what still makes the everyday ritual useful. Full dual-engine report: academic synthesis + Reddit/X practitioner patterns.
What collapsed
- Bargh elderly-walking priming (1996) — failed with infrared timing (Doyen 2012).
- Warm-coffee interpersonal warmth (Williams & Bargh 2008) — failed (Chabris 2019; Lynott 2014).
- Power posing hormones/behavior (Carney 2010) — failed (Ranehill 2015); Carney later disavowed.
- Money priming — fragile after bias correction.
What replicates (and how we use it)
- Implementation intentions — Gollwitzer & Sheeran 2006 meta, d≈0.65 (field effects often smaller).
- Cyclic / physiological sighing — Balban et al. 2023 Stanford RCT in Cell Reports Medicine; 5 min/day beat mindfulness for positive mood.
- Gratitude / savoring — modest effects (Emmons & McCullough; Seligman 2005 three good things; Davis 2016).
- Loved-one photos & threat buffering — Master et al. 2009 (N=25) pain attenuation; treat as mechanism, not magic.
- Nostalgia warmth — Sedikides / Wildschut line of work.
- Environmental context-habits — Wendy Wood ~43% of daily acts habitual in stable contexts.
- Morning light — circadian entrainment (Wright 2013); not a cortisol hack.
Why your morning coffee ritual still helps
Not because holding a warm cup secretly makes you kinder (that claim failed). It helps as a habit stack: stable cue + thermal comfort + savoring + optional window light + glance at hung family photos.
Evidence badges on this site
- Replicated RCT/meta — strongest tier.
- Mechanism-backed — plausible pathway, thinner direct trials.
- Myth-check reframe — popular claim failed; useful residual practice explained honestly.
